Taking the first step when starting something new is always the hardest part but you can be assured of a warm welcome when you come to our gym. For a start we know each and everyone by their first name, we are more like a group of friends and family that works really well together.

We have classes for men, women and children, the adults and children train in separate classes. If you are not ready to train in a class just yet, we teach private lessons too.

Please get in touch before you come down to train, don’t just turn up. If you come down to the gym to a session that may not suit you, you won’t be able to train and will have had a wasted journey. We are frequently full also so getting in touch will allow you to ascertain whether there is a place for you at the gym or not.

Please note also that Jiu Jitsu is a combat sport/martial art and although every care is taken there is still a chance that you may be injured, please check the Starting Jiu Jitsu section of this web site and understand that ALL students must have valid, and relevant insurance.

We currently run 3 adult classes per week. Monday and Tuesday are with the gi/kimono (the traditional training uniform) and the Thursday class is no gi (shorts and T-shirts).

For continuity in training we will work on a specific topic for a certain amount of time to make sure everyone understands it. We achieve this in part because we will have the same content of the class on a Monday and Tuesday then do the no gi version of it on the Thursday. If you train all week you get to train the same thing 3 times which helps to get the technique into your muscle memory.

Following is a very brief description of our formats:

 

Juniors
The Junior Jiu Jitsu classes are the full spectrum of practical martial arts, which includes striking, throws & take downs and fighting on the floor, plus we use games to help develop other attributes, making for very productive training.

The belt system is such that the student has to be able to compete in striking, takedowns and groundwork. Say a new student joins, they obviously start at white belt, when they have the striking techniques pertinent for that grade they receive a stripe on their belt.

Likewise for takedowns and ground. Then when they can spar and incorporate these techniques they move to the next belt colour. This way they get technical training plus resistance too. Maybe I'm biased but I honestly think this is the best system for belt promotions I have ever seen!!

Combat Base has many juniors athletes, we attend competitions and always give excellent performances that will help to give the juniors confidence to keep training and keep competing. The potential that is there is awesome, if nurtured right then these same juniors will go on to much bigger things.

 

Seniors
The adult classes are all Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, majority are with the gi but we also do no gi. At the moment we are training 75% gi and 25% no gi, this is just my personal preference, if you want to see which suits you best try both then decide. There are plenty of ‘gi versus no gi’ arguments on the internet if you feel the need to investigate.

As for training at Combat Base, we incorporate standing grappling into the syllabus, work extensively on the ground and when you have an understanding of the ground game we can start to add strikes too. Be patient because you need to be able to walk before you can run.

Oh, and before you ask, we don’t do “cage fighting”

PLEASE NOTE THAT YOU MUST HAVE A GI TO TRAIN IN THE MONDAY AND TUESDAY CLASSES, NO EXCEPTIONS!

We just have 1 junior class available at the moment, as above.

All athletes must have valid insurance to cover all aspects of training, insurance is purchased through us at a cost of £15.00 per year.
